The United Nations General Assembly Special Session on HIV and AIDS (UNGASS) identified young people aged 15-24 years as a priority group in reducing new HIV infections and set a global target of reducing incidences of HIV in this group by 20% by 2015.

Goals of South Africa’s National Strategic Plan (NSP) 2007-2011:
The HIV & AIDS and STI Strategic Plan for South Africa 2007-2011 priority areas 1 is prevention and the target is to reduce the national HIV incidence rate by 50% by 2011. Identifying and keeping HIV negative people negative is the most effective and sustainable intervention in the AIDS response.

In response to the above the Institute’s Integrated Youth Development Programme includes an HIV/AIDS education and awareness component. The education and awareness programme is also integrated into all other project and programmes of the Institute.
